The Big Live Comedy Show!
This past Sunday Drew and I had tickets to be apart of the studio audience for the Big Live Comedy Show! To be honest, we had no idea what it was, but we knew Vince Vaughn was going to be there so we figured it'd be worth it. We found out about the show when we were buying tickets for The Voice on 1iota, we signed up for the wait list and voila! Priority tickets were granted.
The Big Live Comedy Show marks the kickoff to YouTube Comedy Week, a six-day extravaganza of high-profile stars, unique projects, and funnybone-tickling treats from every corner of the internet.
Taping was taking place at Culver Studios, which was once owned by Ricky & Lucy of I Love Lucy, in Culver City. They said to park at the Trader Joe’s lot across the street, but it was Sunday, and every Californian should know to take advantage of the free meters on Sunday! We got a spot literally right next to the entrance of the studio. Tickets said to arrive 30 minutes before check-in time, which was 4pm, so we got there at 3:10 or so.
As we walked up to the line a friendly 1iota staff member kindly took our tickets and directed us to the front of the line. We didn’t know what was happening or why we were being sent to the front, but we would soon find out that they chose 40 people to go into the studio early and be a part of the pre-tapings! No standing in a long, hot line for us! It was like being given the golden Willy Wonka ticket 😉
We were hanging out in the studio with stars like Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman, Andy Samberg, the cast of Workaholics and Ryan Phillippe! They used us as extras for a pre-taping with Lil Bub and gave us all 1st and 2nd row seats. By 5pm we were sitting all cozy in our chairs, except they had literally misplaced my seat, row 2- seat 6 had gone missing! But by 6pm I had my seat and Todd Glass, the host of the show, kicked off the countdown to the start!
We sat feet away from Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogen's opening act, watched in stupor as Andy Samberg and the Lonely Island (named after the nickname they gave their apartment on Olympic) performed "I'm On A Boat" and met a whole slew of YouTube performers we had never even heard of! Some of which being:
Garfunkle and Oats- these 2 girls who write hilarious songs about ordinary life issues
Tummy Talk- we didn't know what to think about this one. These 3 talented musicians "drum" on their large Hawaiian looking friend by slapping his belly, back and, for a grand finale, his face..! The things people will do for the sake of comedy blows my mind.
Pete Holmes- better known as the voice of the e-trade baby, he is also a comedian... he should stick to the e-trade commercials...
Dax Flame- a very interesting/ awkward character that gets millions of views for absolutely. no. reason.
Lil Bub- known as "Nature’s Most Precious Happy Accident" is a little kitty born with dwarfism, making him a perma-kitten. He was born with a dis-formed lower jaw, causing it's little tongue to stick out at all times. When his owner brought him to stage he made sure to kiss Lil Bub before leaving him up there for the skit and kissed him at the end when he picked him back up :)
Overall, we learned a lot about YouTube that we probably did not need to know. Drew and I both agreed that we could have watched the entire show with our jaws dropped, completely expressionless. It was very interesting to watch what the YouTube comedy world calls entertaining, and there is no denying that each and everyone of these comedians/performers thinks outside the box, is not afraid to push limits and seek entertainment no matter what the humiliation factor may be... it might be stretching it a bit, but you could call the Big Live Comedy Show an incredible display of courage, courage that perhaps could be used in more productive ways, but hey, a laugh's a laugh and we could all use more reasons to smile about something right ;) And Lil Bub is the cutest lil thing I have EVER seen.
